This famous haunting 28 minute short film by Chris Marker is told virtually entirely with still photographs. It served as the influence years later for Terry gilliam’s 12 Monkeys.
This is remarkable post- apocalyptic sci-fi that was so often referred to in classes and readings at film school but never shown (probably due to unavailability in the video age).
It is poetry on film. Captivating images. A thought provoking story that brings up themes relating to memory and time. It resonates well after the film finishes – it’s soundtrack, visuals and narration all create an emotional poem. It’s no wonder it’s been regarded as a French film classic – and shows that short films can occasionally be as powerful as their longer cousins.
