The template for film noir with impeccable taut direction by one of the best, Billy Wilder. It has all the aspects that defined the genre: shadows and mood lighting, corruption, greed, the score, the mood, femme fatale – a blonde, the underworld.
The casting is sublime – the leads all playing against type – Edward G Robinson normally the crim is the well to so Insurance Manager, Barbara Stanwyck convincing as the convincer and the normally comedic MacMurray as the hard boiled salesman going down a dark path.
Taut, moody, crisp dialogue by a screenplay by Wilder and Raymond Chandler. Being a fan of noir – I’m glad this one finally caught up with me.
